1. What is important to you personally about privacy?
· Feel that my “stuff” is private
· We need to be safe but with a balance of privacy
· Not judged by information about you

2. What information about yourself are you comfortable in giving out?
· Name – first name only
· Age
· Zip
· Hobbies, interests
· Gender / race
· In certain situations (teachers) you are more apt to give information (when confidential is assured)

3. Where do you draw the line and say “That’s none of your business!”
· Social Security number
· Money, parents employment
· Address
· Real e-mail (use aliases)
· Gender / race (no if used for quotas / OK for stats)

4. What do you think of when I ask you about confidentiality (privacy)?
· Doctor / therapist
· USA Patriot Act
· Priest / lawyer

5. What influences in our society are changing how we think about privacy?

· Important

· Medical privacy – teens don’t tell because they’re worried about parents – compromising safety
· National security
· Want your own privacy, but we need to know about other people
· Be able to choose what information is public

7. What concerns do you have about privacy?
· Make sure they aren’t sharing your information especially on Web
· Schools going on MySpace to find information on kids – police searches of lockera and MySpace postings
· Companies on WWW are compromising privacy
· Free time vs. school time –information about what you do out of school shouldn’t have impact on school time

8. What types of information could hurt a person if made public?
· Sexual orientation
· Identity theft
· Criminal record
· Library books (what people are reading looking at on the web)
· Medical history – insurance companies can abuse this information

9. What information about others do you feel you need to know?
· If person has criminal record
· Sexual predator
· Doctor malpractice
· Licensing for profession
· Allergies
· This is different if you meet face-to-face vs online

10. What decisions have you made about your privacy? Do you take any actions to protect your privacy?
· Firewall / anti-spyware
· I am much more aware of what I do especially when on the web
· Erase your history
· Be careful in what you tell people face-to-face
· Make to set up private settings for web sites (Facebook, MySpace, etc.)
· Use aliases
· Phone number is anonymous / unlisted / take number off Yahoo!
· Lie

11. What trade‑offs or compromises would you be willing to make with your privacy?
· I am going away to college and want to make new friends so I am sharing some information online
· For convenience (save credit card information)
· When exchanging information, give yours back
· Help the country
· Phone number for prizes

12. Are you surprised at any of the things you have heard today?
· Can find telephone and addresses online
· That some people know they should do certain things to protect their privacy, but don’t do it
· That some people see a difference between face-to-face and online contact
