What is important to you personally about privacy?
that my information is kept confidential, passwords (tend to use those I will remember easily, as I can be forgetful - for someone to know one password could devastate me), peace of mind, that i have a choice regarding access to personal information - even after i die, that it is not shared with anyone unauthorized or sold
What information about yourself are you comfortable in giving out?
almost anything but my name, social security number, and address. preferences, favorite colors, etc. are fine. look at myspace - i am amazed ohow comfortable people are about "private" information
not much. When people warking in stroes ask for my phone number I never give it. I will give my zip code
I think that the who question is important: with a stranger, I'm willing to give demographic or personal information, but much more readily on the condition of anonymity or that my name isn't attached to the data
It depends on whether or not it is a trusted organization
What do you think of when I ask you about confidentiality?
Trustworthiness, doctor's office and porn, government intrusion and how it happens often and without the subject being aware, confidentiality is much more of a legal term than privacy or personal information security
What influences in our society are changing how we think about privacy?
identity theft, the internet, personal web pages, social networking sites, patriot act, reality TV shows,
How do you feel about privacy? What concerns do you have about privacy?
I'm concerned that lack of privacy will make people afraid, concerned about the erosion of privacy and people's seeming lack of concern in protecting certain private issues related to civil liberties
I'm on the no-fly list and it has really made me suspect the government and their data mining practices. It also make me nervous to research certain topics. I may be paranoid but I can't help it.
What types of information could hurt a person if made public?
anything can hurt you in the right context, social security numbers, passwords, sexual orientation, health records, beyond one's personal information and issues of identity theft, depending on who's become privy to private information, it could hurt someone
What information about others do you feel you need to know?
Name and title, if they are racist, sexist, elitist - which usually comes out pretty quickly
I think it's defined by the other person, not me!
What decisions have you made about your privacy? Do you take any actions to protect your privacy?
lie about something on every form i fill out, I tear up credit card applications, never use the same password, shred mail (especially credit card apps), never carry social security card
What trade-offs or compromises would you be willing to make with your privacy?
demographics, criminal background I would glady provide in certain situations
