What is important to you personally about privacy? Really important, Internet passwords, MySpace can change people’s lives drastically, Facebook safer? Avoid ridicule for imaginings, the right to go home and shut the door, to be by yourself and think for yourself, the security of knowing your thoughts are private, especially if you put your foot in your mouth, being overheard, email & photos. Don’t like my stuff online, being alone sometimes, no privacy from parents – walk in my room & listen on the phone, adults on MySpace, private profile v getting lots of friends, choose whether to follow rules, photo of growing marijuana on MySpace – stupid, satellite photos, Bathroom, my room, letter or email or phone to my friend, don't look over my shoulder.
What information about yourself are you comfortable in giving out? If I knew who they were, but not on Internet. First name but not last or address – fear/security, depends on who, phone number, share surface favorites to meet new people, not SS#, can Google all this info – may show up on other people’s MySpace, would usually answer question, effect of news stories. What they can see, nothing, depends on if I like a person, trusted friend. Name, age, gender, ethnicity, height & weight, birthdate, what you like to do & don't like to do – preferences.
Where do you draw the line and say, “That’s none of your business! When a peer who’s not a friend pries, my grades. Wasting my time, whenever I want, between first & last name, my address is other people’s address too, date of birth, depends on who, where you live, security info, why do you need to know, give false name. Personal life, how I spend free time, gender questions – gay, PT, 10 or 11. Stranger, something I don't want to share, where I live, phone, email, address in student directory.
What do you think of when I ask you about privacy? It’s a big deal, can be broken in lots of different ways – ID theft, SS#. My body, airport security x-ray, government email & cell phone tracking, Google, having an ethnic name, not much available today – soon chips in babies, society is so afraid of criminals, dishonesty assumed, what are you hiding? We need more of it, parents want us to grow up ok, say they trust us but don’t, over-protective – go through my room, invade my privacy to build their trust. Episode of Full House. My body and personal space, unwanted touching v fitting in, having to sit with parents at church, snoopy gossiping peers. Be able to be by myself, think stuff without having to tell.
What influences in our society are changing how we think about privacy? ID theft, MySpace – name, phone, school. MySpace, government, schools, paparazzi, morality & safety, Paris Hilton, the news – stories on phone tapping & bad people (bogeyman), webcams & cell phone cameras, news reporters questions – no just say no. Technology, classmates behavior and being popular, rapping and baiting others in cafeteria, reality TV, privacy is getting worse these days – didn’t used to have to worry about getting hurt just walking to the store. Technology – Internet, hidden camera show, you expect protection for your privacy, peer pressure.
How do you feel about privacy? Big deal, everyone should keep some stuff private, the whole world shouldn’t know your secret. Teens don’t have bank accounts to protect, publishing form – sign away copyright, have more tech to protect privacy now, can stay away from MySpace.
What concerns do you have about privacy? It’s a problem, people give out more than they should. All about being popular – jerking kid’s pants down. Necessary, anything embarrassing, if I really don't want to say something.
What types of information could hurt a person if made public? A comment that’s stereotyped, like “macacca,” something you wouldn’t want the world to see, for our own protection, and privacy. Info an employer might see, gossip, ADD, diabetes, DNA, SS#, race or nationality, rapemyteacher.com. What I do after school & at home, rumors – drugs, gay – people treat you differently, people get in your business and then talk behind your back. Political thoughts, feelings, backstabbing & gossip, personal opinions.
What information about others do you feel you need to know? I respect what friends want to keep to themselves. I expect to be told the information I need. Is a dossier different from a resume? Names, VA Tech – could a person harm people? But people we least expect may snap, people think everyone is weird. Tell people you have a condition or let them think you’re weird, e.g. Tourettes? Name, if they're a good person, if it affects relationship e.g. if you found out later your partner was transgendered.
What decisions have you made about your privacy? Do you take any actions to protect your privacy? Or, have you decided it is too much trouble or it is hopeless? I don’t do MySpace or Facebook, and if I ever do, I’ll do it for myself, not rely on a friend. Lied to Facebook, made fake identity online, use defunct email address, separate email addresses for different purposes, no name for site registration. Hide things about yourself, but doesn’t work, if lie about things get reputation, just don’t tell. Don’t leave stuff around, but lost my backpack so principal looked at it. Passwords, firewalls, locking the door, blinds & curtains, red light cameras, tinted windows on buses.
What tradeoffs or compromises would you be willing to make with your privacy? Red light camera improves safety but might be false accusation, compromises your rights, dangers over hyped v it won’t happen to me, an age card for MySpace would be invasive, recognize face so why stamp hand? Your secret for mine, use fake email or set up account just for spam, not an ad on the Internet, but a trusted source, a major company, for a Yahoo account.
Are you surprised at any of this that you’ve heard today? Is privacy an important topic for the public to discuss? Yes, but no one really cares, we take it for granted. Protects individuality, Invisible Man – Ellison. www.public-records-now.com No.
