ALA passed a resolution authorizing a National Conversation on Privacy and the Intellectual Freedom Round Table is working on framing the issue. What we want to do is create a guide, (somewhat like the National Issues Forum http://www.nifi.org/ but maybe less elaborate), that will be available to libraries nationally to hold deliberations on public policy in the area of privacy.
The first step in framing the issue is finding out what is on people’s minds. I am here to ask you some questions in order to gather your concerns and add them to the mix that will be used to decide how the issue is framed.
Using your concerns will help us avoid creating something that is not relevant to the general public. We will take every opinion expressed and look for commonalities so we can cluster them into 3 to 5 broad choices that are meaningful to the average person. So, what I need to hear from you today is all the different thoughts these questions raise. We will not come to any conclusions or try to persuade each other or challenge any opinion.
Date __________ age range __________ demographics __________
What is important to you personally about privacy?
What information about yourself are you comfortable in giving out?
What do you think of when I ask you about confidentiality?
What influences in our society are changing how we think about privacy?
How do you feel about privacy? What concerns do you have about privacy?
What types of information could hurt a person if made public?
What information about others do you feel you need to know?
What decisions have you made about your privacy? Do you take any actions to protect your privacy?
What trade-offs or compromises would you be willing to make with your privacy?
